Merck Chemical Engineering Research and DevelopmentDepartment (CERD) in Rahway, NJ is seeking interns who will operate as afully-integrated member of a team. Day-to-day research for the intern willfocus on process and technology development, bulk drug supply, and/orcommercial product launch.



The CERD departmentdevelops the processing knowledge necessary to successfully scale-up andefficiently produce drugs at a commercial scale. Development efforts focus onensuring robust, cost-effective, safe, environmentally benign chemicalprocesses and advancing technologies for the laboratories, pilot plants, andmanufacturing facilities to secure a competitive advantage for Merck.



The CERD department's Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API)Pilot Plant facilities handle demanding organic synthesis at scales rangingfrom one to thousands of kilograms. The pilot plant provides a flexible andresponsive environment for supplying the drug compound needed for clinical andpharmaceutical development. It also provides an experimental environment forswift scale-up of process innovations and the acquisition of key knowledge tosupport product filing.


The department generates data on scale-up and processcharacterization from lab and pilot plant efforts.¬  The data ultimately results in the definitionof the optimized process which assures quality product and consistentperformance. Members also work closely with Commercialization sites to ensurethe successful installation of the factory process and to provide material forproduct launch.


CERD also invests in the development of new technologies andworkflows to enable efficient process development.¬  This work spans across diverse unitoperations such as reaction engineering, biocatalysis, and particleengineering.¬  The scouting oftechnologies and evaluation of their applications presents a unique opportunityfor innovation and broad impact across the product portfolio.



The interns will alsoattend departmental and team meetings to provide a wider perspective on processdevelopment in the pharmaceutical industry.¬ Tours of pilot plants and development labs as well as a visit to aformulation facility may be integrated into the internship program to diversifyexposure.¬ 



The intern is responsible for accurate electronic notebookrecording, experimental set-up techniques, interpretation of results, and safelab practices. Intern will have the opportunity to gain further knowledge,practical chemical engineering skill sets, and exposure to problems in processresearch, and perspective on the practical aspects of drug development.



We are seeking intern candidates with strong academicperformance, communication skills, teamwork, and the ability to work in amulti- functional environment.




This is a full-time internship position. Housing subsidy is not provided as part of this program and must be funded 100% by the student.¬ 


Qualifications


Education:


  • Required: Candidates must be currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in chemical or biochemical engineering.

  • Candidates must have completed at least (3) years of undergraduate study by June of 2019.


RequiredExperience and Skills:



  • Candidates must be available to work full-time for up to (12) consecutive weeks beginning in May or June of 2019..


PreferredExperience and Skills:



  • Candidates should have strong technical and problem-solving skills, including a grasp of chemical engineering fundamentals.

  • Candidates should have a strong interest in process / technology development and scale-up.

  • Candidates should have a high level of innovation, creativity,and self-initiative, along with the ability to plan and organize.¬ 

  • Candidates should have strong communication skills.
